.com or .co.nz? Print

.com or .co.nz?

This is not a simple decision.

The factors to consider are:
  • Where are your customers?
  • What is your brand?
  • How will you be found?
  • Where is your site hosted?
  • Can I have both?

Where are your customers?

Unless your customers are solely in New Zealand or your site is hosted in New Zealand, then .com isn’t really useful.
If your market is international – then .com is critical.

What is your brand?

Does  your New Zealand  business  have strong New Zealand values as a part of your brand values? If so, then you must have a .co.nz domain name.

How will you be found?

If search engines are your prime source – then their rules will determine your domain name extension related to your brand and market.

Where is your site hosted?

Do you know where your site is hosted? You may have a hosting account with a New Zealand company but your site may be hosted overseas. This is an important factor for search engines to rank you higher.

Can I have both?

Certainly, you can!
